Scams and Frauds: How Our Brains Can Make Us Victims
Speakers: Denise Scruggs, Director, Beard Center on Aging, Lynchburg College; Betty Brickhouse, Specialist, Central Virginia Area Agency on Aging
There are multiple scams afoot in our communities. Research suggests that the natural aging process can cause subtle shifts in mind and mind-set that make us more vulnerable to being scammed as we age. These changes in the way we process information begin in our 30’s and becomes more noticeable by our 60’s. Scams come in many forms—telemarketing and internet scams, fake lotteries, door-to-door sales scams, and scams that exploit our religious or patriotic impulses, to name a few. A new form of frauds is that of using our medical identities and records to obtain care or bill insurance carriers for care
not delivered. This form of fraud results in the loss of millions of health care dollars. Although the aged are more vulnerable to fraud and scams, they are by no means the only victims. This program will educate us about how various scams and frauds operate and ways to protect ourselves and our loved ones from them.
